To create an exam, navigate to the course's Course Panel, and click Create new Exam in the administration panel.
Basic Information
Once you are on the Edit Info page, fill in the exam’s basic info, like exam title, description, the type of exam, passing score, instructions, etc.
To decide whether you want the exam to be a Try & Learn exam (considered more of a quiz) or a Certification exam, keep in mind that certification exams are meant to inhibit cheating. You determine how many questions are randomly selected from a larger group of questions. For example, you can have an exam made up of 10 random questions, even though you’ve created 25 questions in total for the exam. Each time a learner takes the exam he or she will be given a random set of questions from the complete library of questions created for the exam.
Kinds of Exams
The next step is to select the kind of exam you want: Standard, Knowledge Qualifier, or Prequalification Exam. Let's see the last two in more detail!
Knowledge Qualifier Exam: If you have this option marked as "Yes" , you have the option to select what will happen when a user fails the exam.
1) You can select that all progress toward previous lecture steps resets each time the user fails the exam. If a course has multiple knowledge qualifier exams, only the progress of the lecture steps in between the exams will be affected.
2) If you only allow a finite number of attempts for this exam, and the student fails after they’ve reached the maximum number of attempts, you have the option to select whether only the previous step’s progress should be reset, or whether the entire course should be reassigned. If you select the whole course to be reassigned then you can select whether the course will be reassigned immediately or after a period of x months (from 1 to 46 months).
Please note that the "If student fails after max attempts have been reached" setting is only available when a finite number is selected in the "Students can retake the exam" setting.
Prequalification Exam: If you have this option marked as "Yes", then you have two options for when a user passes the exam: mark all previous or next lecture steps (depending on your selection) as completed. If a course has multiple prequalification exams then lectures between multiple prequalification exams will also be marked as completed.
Moreover, you can select whether all exams before or after the prequalification exam (depending on your selection) will also be marked as completed.
Exam Settings
- Allow Exam to be Printed: You can define if you want to allow the exam to be printed and administered offline by Managers with reporting permissions on the exam. Read also: Tracking Offline Exams
- Show Score Realtime: If you have this marked as "Yes", learners will be able to see whether their answer was correct or not immediately after they answer a question.
- Order of questions: You can decide whether you want questions to appear in either the order you edited them or randomly. Remember, Certification exams always present the questions randomly.
-
Students can skip Questions: If you have this marked as "Yes", learners will be able to skip a question, and come back at a later point while taking the exam.
-
- Display Skip to end button: If you have selected that your Students cannot Skip Questions, with this setting you have the option to select if they will be able to use the "Finish Exam" button, to skip to the last question, and finish the exam without having answered all the questions.
-
-
Students can take the exam: You can allow learners to retake the exam as many times as they want, or limit it up to 10 times.
-
-
-
- Waiting Period: This setting is only important if learners are allowed to retake the exam. Decide here the amount of time the learner must wait before being able to take the exam again.
-
-
-
Exam has Time Limit: Here you can decide if and what the time limit will be for the learners to complete the exam. (We strongly suggest giving a time limit of some sort; keep reading to find out why.)
- Note that users can leave the exam at any time, even when there is only one attempt and a password set. This means that the user can leave the exam, look at the content, and then resume the exam. To prevent this, you can set time limits for his exams. The time runs out even if you leave the exam.
- Score after submitting the exam: You can allow learners to see their score after submitting the exam.
- Exam Mastery Setting: You can set an option for learners to retake the missed questions on an exam to achieve “mastery.” If it’s set to yes, when the student retakes the exam, only the wrong questions will be displayed.
- Answers visibility: If you have this marked as "Yes", learners will be able to see the answers only once, after submitting the exam.
- Exam Password: Set up a password for your exam. Users will be able to access the Exam only if they know the password. Otherwise, they will not be able to Start/Resume/Restart the exam.

Organize Questions
Once you create the questions for your exam you can also organize them into sections. Just click Add Sections, add a name to your section and click Save. Then simply drag and drop your questions to the preferred section.
Moreover, you can select if you want to hide some questions by making them invisible. Just change the Visible toggle next to a question or select multiple questions and click on the Visible / Non Visible buttons. After hiding the questions, the exam score will be calculated accordingly for the users that are enrolled in this exam.
If you are using question pools in your Academy, you can also add questions from a question pool to your exam. Or you can organize your newly created questions in a pool! To learn more about question pools read here: Creating and Using a Question Pool
Note: In certain scenarios, a question that has been deleted from an exam might still be visible to users. This can occur when a user had previously "Skipped" the question during an earlier attempt. If the user selects the "Resume" option to continue their exam, the system retrieves the questions from their most recent attempt to maintain continuity.
As a result, even though the question has been deleted from the exam structure, it remains part of the user’s session data and is displayed to ensure their progress is not disrupted.
This behavior is intended to support users in resuming their attempts seamlessly, but it is strongly recommended to review any potential implications when making changes to exams that are already in progress.
Publishing your Exam
When you are finished building your exam, click the big blue Make visible button to make your exam visible. It will then appear on the course card under the Exams section.
