Overview
If you're using a Prequalification Exam in your course, you likely want to create a streamlined learning experience:
Learners who demonstrate full mastery can move ahead without completing the rest of the training.
Learners who do not achieve the required score can proceed directly to the training content and complete it as intended.
This article walks you through how to configure your course to support exactly that workflow.
The Scenario
You’ve set up a course with:
A Prequalification Exam
A Lecture
A New Exam
You have configured the Prequalification Exam settings as follows:
Based on this configuration:
Lectures after the Prequalification Exam should be affected.
Exams should be marked as completed via prequalification.
Your goal is simple:
If a learner scores 100% on the Prequalification Exam, they should skip the lecture and the new exam.
If a learner scores less than 100%, which has been set as the passing score, they should automatically continue to the lecture and then complete the new exam.
However, you may notice that after failing the Prequalification Exam, the next step remains locked and the learner cannot continue.
Why This Happens
This behavior depends on your Step Sequence setting within the course.
If the course is configured with a mandatory step sequence, the system requires each step to be successfully completed before unlocking the next one.
This means:
If the Prequalification Exam is failed, the learner must pass it before moving forward to the next step.
The lecture will remain locked because the exam has not been successfully completed.
This is expected behavior when using a mandatory sequence.
Recommended Configuration
To achieve the desired workflow, update your course settings as follows:
Set Step Sequence to: Suggested
Here’s how:
1. Go to the Courses page.
In the left navigation, make sure you are in the Academy Workspace.
When in the Academy Workspace, select Training Admin. Then, choose Manage Training and select Courses.
2. Select your course
3. From the Course Panel on the right-hand side of your screen, click on Step Management to access the course step settings.
4. Locate Step Sequence
5. Change from Mandatory to Suggested
6. Save your changes
You can keep the Prequalification Exam passing score at 100%.
How This Configuration Works
With Step Sequence set to Suggested:
If the learner passes the Prequalification Exam, they can skip ahead without completing the lecture and the new exam.
If the learner does not pass the Prequalification Exam, they can immediately proceed to the lecture and complete the remaining steps.
This setup gives you flexibility while still supporting a strong validation-based learning model.
Final Thoughts
Using a Prequalification Exam is a powerful way to personalize the learner experience within a course. With the correct Step Sequence configuration, you can:
Recognize learner proficiency immediately
Guide learners who need reinforcement directly into training
Maintain a smooth and intuitive course flow
If you’re designing similar workflows, reviewing your Step Sequence setting is a great first step to ensure your course behaves exactly as intended.
