This article explains what happens to a learner’s course or learning path assignments when:
The learner was previously assigned training through an Automated Assignment Rule, and
The learner is later deactivated and then reactivated.
The behavior depends on:
Whether the learner still meets the rule’s criteria upon reactivation, and
Whether the rule’s “Unassign when criteria are not met anymore” option is enabled.
Behavior Upon Reactivation
When a learner is reactivated, the system re-evaluates any automated assignment rules that apply to them.
Scenario 1: Learner Still Meets the Rule Criteria
If the learner still meets the rule’s criteria after reactivation:
They remain assigned to the course or learning path.
The enrollment reason remains: “Assigned by rule".
Result: No change to their existing assignment.
Scenario 2: Learner No Longer Meets the Rule Criteria
If the learner does not meet the rule’s criteria upon reactivation, the outcome depends on the rule configuration.
Case A: “Unassign when criteria are not met anymore” checkbox is selected
The system detects that the learner no longer matches the rule.
The learner will be unassigned from the course or learning path.
This happens because the rule is configured to remove assignments when criteria are no longer met.
Result: Learner is unassigned from the training.
Case B: “Unassign when criteria are not met anymore” checkbox is not selected
Even though the learner no longer matches the rule criteria:
The system will not remove the assignment.
The learner will remain assigned to the training.
Result: Learner stays assigned despite not matching the rule anymore.
Summary Table
| Learner Status After Reactivation | “Unassign when criteria are not met anymore” Rule Setting | Outcome |
| Still meets criteria | Either selected or not | Remains assigned (Assigned by rule) |
| Does not meet criteria | Selected | Unassigned |
| Does not meet criteria | Not selected | Remains assigned |
