If you notice that searching for a course or learning path while assigning training in the New Experience returns fewer results than the same search in the Classic Experience, this article explains why that happens and how to find every item you expect.
How Search Matches Keywords in the New Experience
In the New Experience, the search returns items whose title contains the exact word you type, or a word that starts with your term. It does not automatically match your term when the term appears in the middle of a longer, connected word. Search is not case-sensitive.
How This Differs From the Classic Experience
The Classic Experience search matches your term anywhere inside a title, so it can return more items for the same term — including titles where your term is joined to other characters. For example, if a course is titled NewHireSafety_2026, searching Safety in the New Experience will not return it, because Safety is connected to NewHire and is not the start of that word. The Classic Experience would return it, because it matches the term anywhere in the title. This difference is expected behavior as Classic Experience and New Experience use different search engines.
Finding a Term Inside a Longer Connected Word
When the term you are looking for may be part of a longer connected word in a title, use wildcards to widen the match:
- *term* returns items where the term appears anywhere inside a longer connected word — for example, *Safety* returns NewHireSafety_2026.
- term* returns items that start with the term — for example, Ita* returns Italy and Italian.
- *term returns items that end with the term — for example, *bye returns Goodbye.
- Use ? in place of a single character — for example, b?tter returns bitter, butter, and better.
What to Expect
This matching behavior is intentional in the New Experience and helps the most relevant results appear first. If a search returns fewer items than expected, add wildcards as shown above to include titles where your term is part of a longer word. For more detail on keyword and wildcard search, see Keyword Functionalities in Resources Search Bar, the same wildcard syntax applies when searching for training to assign.
