Understanding the Perception Gap

If Skills are set up in your Academy, users with reporting permissions can see the perception gap between a users self-assessments and their managers' assessments.

The Perception Gap will then help you better understand the gap between how the user evaluates themselves on specific skills and how their managers evaluate them.

In the left navigation, make sure you are in the Team Workspace.

When in the Team Workspace, select My Team Dashboard, then Development, then Skills.

Here, select the Assessment gap tab. This tab only appears if Employees can conduct metrics self-assessments is turned on under your Skills management settings.

This shows the average perception gap for all employees you have reporting permissions for, and the average perception gap per employee.

Select the individual's arrow to see their perception gap per assessed skill.

At the top of the Assessment gap tab you'll now see three statistics: Learners with 0-10% gap, Learners with 11-24% gap, and Learners with 25%+ gap, along with an overall Average assessment gap for everyone in the list — color-coded Green for 0% to 10%, Orange for 11% to 24%, and Red for 25% to 100%.

A learner's own Average assessment gap is the average of the absolute value of their gap on each skill, counting only skills that actually have a gap — so it's always shown as a positive percentage, even though an individual skill's gap (below) can be positive or negative. The page-level Average assessment gap only counts learners who have an actual gap.

By default, the list only shows learners who have an assessment gap; use the Assessment gap filter to include everyone instead. You can also filter by organizational hierarchy and by user custom fields, and sort by learner name or by the average gap, highest to lowest or lowest to highest.

If a learner has neither a manager assessment nor a self-assessment on a skill, that skill shows “No assessments.” If only one side is missing, it shows “No self-assessments” or “No assessments from managers” instead.

Zero: The employee and manager rated the employee the exact same

Positive: The employee rated themselves higher than their manager rated them

Negative: The manager rated the employee higher than the employee rated themselves
