The Difference Between Private and Public Courses

As an Admin or Training Manager, you can decide whether a Course will be private or public. This diagram illustrates how training visibility is determined for Courses, Learning paths, and Events. Visibility controls who can see a training item in the platform—but it does not automatically enroll learners.

1) Private Mode

If your course is in Private mode, only those assigned or invited to enroll to the course will be able to see the course.

2) Public Mode

If your Course is in Public mode, everyone who has access to the category this course is under will be able to see it and enroll in it. Users can find this training in their Catalog.

The link can be shared, and people can be invited to partake in the course.

You can select if you want the course to be available to only your employees, or if guests should be able to see it as well.

You will then be able to distinguish the differently published Courses (purchased, public, private) under Assign Training and Invite Learners in the Team Workspace, and Manage Courses in the Training Admin Workspace.

Courses in the 'Without Category' Category

The visibility and assignment options for these courses depend on whether the course is set as Public or Private.

Public Courses

  • Learner access: All learners can view and self-enroll in public courses listed under Without Category.

  • Manager access: Unit Managers and Heads of Above Units can view and assign these courses, provided they have the appropriate permissions.

Private Courses

  • Learner access: Only Admins and users who have been directly assigned can view private courses listed under Without Category.

  • Manager access: Unit Managers and Heads of Above Units can assign these courses, provided they have the appropriate permissions.

Tip

If you want to ensure that a specific training object cannot be assigned by anyone, place it in a Private Category with visibility restricted to Admins/Content Managers only.
