What Happens If a User Changes Their Preferred Language After an Automated Rule Assigns One?

In Schoox, you can set up Preferred Content Language automated rules. These rules automatically assign a specific language to users based on criteria such as their organizational structure.

This article explains how these automated rules work and what happens if a user manually changes their language preference.

How the Automated Language Assignment Works

When a Preferred Content Language rule is configured, it checks for users who meet the defined criteria (e.g., users in a specific organizational unit).

The rule then assigns the selected language (e.g., German) to those users automatically.

When an affected user logs in for the first time, the language set by the rule will be preselected in the language dropdown list on the login page.

What Happens if the User Selects a Different Language?

If the user manually chooses a different language during login:

  • The newly selected language becomes the user’s preferred content language.
  • This means that for the current session and until the next rule application, the user’s experience will be in the language they selected.

Reapplication of the Rule

It’s important to note:

  • The automated rule continues to exist and remains active.
  • The next time the rule runs, it will re-apply the language assignment.
  • As a result, the user’s preferred language will be reset to the language specified in the rule.

Example Scenario

To illustrate:

  1. A user is assigned German as their preferred language through an automated rule.
  2. They log in for the first time and see German preselected.
  3. They manually change the language to English.
  4. Their preference is saved as English.
  5. The next time the rule runs, the user’s preferred language is changed back to German.

This is the expected behavior of the system.

Note: If you configure Preferred Content Language automated rules, we recommend informing your users about this behavior so they are aware that their language preference may be updated automatically.
