Understanding Course Unassignment Within Learning Paths

Use Case: Removing a Course Assigned Through a Learning Path

When you try to unassign a course from a learner and see the message “User could not be unassigned because the course is part of a learning path”, this is expected behavior and helps keep assignments consistent across the platform.

What’s Happening

You’re seeing this message because the course you’re trying to remove isn’t assigned on its own—it’s included within a learning path the learner is currently enrolled in.

Since learning paths manage course assignments as a group, individual courses within them can’t be removed separately. This ensures learners stay aligned with the full learning path that was intended.

How to Remove the Course

To remove the course from the learner, you’ll need to unassign them from the learning path that contains it. Here’s how you can do that:

In the left navigation, make sure you are in the Team Workspace.

When in the Team Workspace, select Self-Paced Training and then select Unassign Training.

  1. Navigate to the Unassign Training page and select the Learning Paths tab.

  2. In the first step, choose the learning path that includes the course you want to remove.

  3. In the second step, select the learner you wish to unassign.

  4. If the learning path is assigned through an automated rule, select Exclude from assignment rules to ensure the learning path and its courses are not automatically re-assigned.

  5. Select Unassign to complete the process.

Once the learner is unassigned from the learning path, all courses included in that learning path will be automatically removed from the learner’s assignments.

Helpful Tip

If you frequently manage automated assignments, double-checking assignment rules during unassignment can save you time and help ensure learners remain assigned only to what you intend.
