Understanding the “Change Categories” Action in the New Schoox Experience

Overview

This article explains how bulk category management works for resources and how it compares to the Classic Schoox Experience. The goal is to clarify the logic behind the Change Categories action, especially when managing multiple items at once.

The New Schoox Experience follows the same core behavior as Classic’s Move option, with some intentional UI differences to reduce complexity during bulk actions.

In the New Schoox Experience, the Change Categories option functions the same way as the Move option in Classic. Please note that this is a replace action.

When you apply Change Categories, the selected items will:

  • Be removed from all current categories.
  • Be assigned only to the categories you select.

Single Item Example

Initial State:

  • Item belongs to: Category 1, Category 2.

Action:

  • Click Change Categories.
  • Select Category 3.

End Result:

  • Item belongs to: Category 3 only.
  • Item is removed from Category 1 and Category 2.

This behavior is identical to how Move worked in Classic.

Bulk Selection Logic (Multiple Items)

When selecting multiple items at once, the platform does not display checked categories in the Change Categories modal.

Why?

Each selected item may belong to different categories, and showing partial or mixed selections would introduce unnecessary complexity and confusion.

Example Scenario

  • Item 1 belongs to: Category 1, Category 2.
  • Item 2 belongs to: Category 2, Category 3.

When both items are selected:

  • No categories appear pre-selected in the modal.
  • This is expected behavior.

Despite this, you can still select any categories you want and apply the change.

Bulk Category Replacement Example

Scenario:

  • Items currently belong to 10 categories.
  • You want the items to belong to only 9 of those categories.

Required actions:

  1. Select all relevant items.
  2. Click Change Categories.
  3. Select the 9 desired categories.
  4. Click Save.

Result:

  • The selected items are assigned to the chosen 9 categories.
  • The items are automatically removed from the previously assigned 10th category.

Key Takeaways

  • Change Categories replaces all existing categories with the selected ones.
  • Bulk actions do not show checked categories due to differing item assignments.
  • The logic is intentional and designed for consistency and simplicity.
