Course Lectures That Open in a New Tab

While going through a course, you may click on a lecture and see a message in the center of the page inviting you to explore the resource in a new tab, with the course waiting for you in the background.

Instead of displaying directly inside the course player, the content appears blank in the main view.

This behavior can feel unexpected at first, especially if other resources in the same course open normally.

Why this happens

Some course lectures link to external websites that require an additional login or authentication step (for example, a university or organization sign‑in page). When a lecture URL points to a page that must be accessed within its own secure environment, it can’t be displayed inside the embedded course view.

To ensure a smooth and secure experience, the platform automatically opens these types of lectures in a separate browser tab. This allows the external site to handle authentication correctly while keeping your place in the course intact.

How to continue

When you see the message prompting you to open the lecture in a new tab:

  1. Click the link to open the lecture in the new tab.
  2. Complete any required sign‑in or access steps on the external site.
  3. Review the content as intended.
  4. Return to the original course tab when you’re ready to continue—your progress will still be there.

Helpful tips for course creators

If you’re setting up course content that links to external systems requiring authentication:

  • Be aware that these links will open in a new tab for learners.
  • Consider adding a short description in the course step to set expectations (for example, letting learners know they’ll be redirected to another site).

In summary

Opening certain lectures in a new tab is an intentional design choice that supports secure access to external content. It ensures learners can view authenticated resources without interruption, while keeping the course experience seamless and easy to return to.
