Sometimes the best way to learn is in small blocks. Enter Microlearning, a way to help your team members learn new information in small doses, over a period of time, almost like flashcards. Using text, images, questions, and stacks (a combination of text or image and a question), users can now quickly go over information and learn new skills.

Enabling Microlearning

Microlearning needs to be enabled by Schoox first before you can enable it in your Academy.

In the left navigation, make sure you are in the Academy Workspace.

When in the Academy Workspace, select Settings.

Here you can see all current Microlearning courses, as well as create new ones. Select Create Microlearning to start.

Creating a Micro-course Manually

If you have access to and have enabled AI Features, you will get four different options. If not, select Create manually, then Start designing. This article focuses on the basics of manually creating and editing cards in micro-courses; this article covers additional AI functionality.

Course Info

In the next screen, fill out all the required information. The Title, Language and Training Category are mandatory fields.

  • Title: The name of the micro-course
  • Description: A short description on what the micro-course is about
  • Language: The language the micro-course uses
  • Training Category: The category the micro-course is in
  • Estimated Time: How long it takes users to complete
  • External ID: The ID used to share it
  • Tags: Tags to help users easily find the micro-course

Select Create micro-course at the bottom of the page.

Editing Cards

You will be presented with the title card of your micro-course. Edit it however you'd like.

On the right, you'll find a preview of the card. You can hide the preview by disabling Show cards at the top of the page.

Under the card, you'll be able to adjust its background and text colors, as well as the alignment of its text.

The card's tool bar provides additional editing options.

  • Duplicate the card
  •  Move card to the right
  • Hide the card. If hidden , the card won't show up when the course goes live
  • Delete card

Adding Cards

To add a card, select the Add card at the bottom of the previous card.

There are nine kinds of cards (scroll down the list to see them all):

  • Text cards have text for users to remember.
  • Image cards have images for users to remember.
  • Videos cards have images for users to remember.
  • Question cards check what they've learned or introduce ideas.
  • Accordions provide interactive drop-downs, each revealing their content when the arrow is selected.
  • Tabs provide interactive tabs, each revealing their content when selected.
  • Process steps provide a number list, describing a series of steps or linear progression.
  • Flash cards provide interactive cards within the card. Each card's content is revealed upon selection.
  • Stacks provide text or images on one side that then flip over to a question.

Process steps provide a number list, describing a series of steps or linear progression.

Add as many as you'd like, editing as described earlier. When you are done, select Save cards.

Adding images

Add an image by selecting Select image at the bottom, and uploading one from your computer.

Then selected the desired file...

...crop as needed, and save.

Note: The title card will need an image that is higher than it is wide, as it fills the entire card with the image. Other cards will accept images of any aspect ratio.

When adding an image to a card (except the title card), you'll be able to also align the image above or below the text.

Image Upload Requirements
Uploaded images must meet the following specifications:

  • Minimum dimensions: 175 × 175 pixels

  • Maximum dimensions: 2560 × 2560 pixels

  • Maximum file size: 50 MB

Adding Video Cards

Micro-course videos need to be between 2 and 60 seconds in length. After uploading the video, enter the start and end points of the video in the fields.

During playback, learners can view the video in full-screen mode by selecting the full-screen icon.

Video Upload Requirements

  • Videos must not exceed 500 MB in file size.

  • Videos must be between 2 and 60 seconds in length. If they fall outside this range, they must be trimmed after upload.

  • Videos retain their original aspect ratio, which may result in borders appearing around the video.

Questions

Answer rationale explanations can also be added to questions, providing more insight into why one answer is more correct than the others.

Branding Your Micro-Course

Making sure the cards look the way they should has been improved, with more options available and a more robust platform on which to work. With this release, you are easily able to set up the look of all your cards at once.

In the Configure drop-down at the top of the page, select Edit branding. This option is available to you while first creating a new micro-course or editing and existing one. Selecting this option will bring up the branding page.

Your academy's brand's shades will automatically be populated. These shades affect the various specific elements, as they do throughout your academy.  You are able to see examples in the various cards previewed. You can leave it as is, or generate alternative shades.

Select the background and font colors beneath.

Under each card, you can toggle Overwrite with global style to the left (off) to disregard any changes moving forward.

At the top of the page you're able to switch between defining the look of All card types and Specific card types.

Under Specific card types, you are able to focus on just the look of each of the different card types individually.

When finished, save your changes at the top of the page.

Mapping Skills

If Skills are enabled in your Academy (Enabling Skills in Your Academy), select Map skills in the Configure menu. Learners can improve their skill scores by finishing the course, and the course will be included in Career Path and Job Training recommendations if said skills are mapped to jobs.

  • Skills: Chose Academy Skills from the dropdown menu
  • Al Recommendations: If AI is not disabled, you will get recommended skills here. By adding these skills, they will be mapped to the micro-course and added to the Academy.

Select your skills from the drop-down menu and/or from the provided list beneath (depending on if you have AI Skills enabled in your academy.

When finished, save the skills at the top of the page.

Scheduling and Publishing Micro-courses

The following steps are the same both for AI and from Scratch.

Select Schedule from the Configure drop-down.

You are able to schedule the micro-course, so that the cards and stacks appear in a predetermined sequence over a period of time. To do so, select Custom Schedule.

Select the days of the week you'd like the cards and stacks to be distributed. Then determine when the first and last card should be presented on each of those days.

In the drop-down menu that appears, select how often the cards and stacks should appear within that timeline.

Stacks can be thought of as a card with two sides. The content is on the front, and on the back a question regarding the content. You can determine how far apart these two sides are revealed to the learner. The stack interval takes precedence over the card schedule. Meaning, whatever interval you select here will add to the time between cards, as well.

Example of scheduling

Let's say you have twelve cards and make them available on Mondays and Wednesdays, between 1:00pm and 3:00pm, at an interval of once an hour. This means three cards are released each Monday and each Wednesday (at 1:00, 2:00, and 3:00) — six per week. The micro-course would take two weeks to finish.

If you set them up in an interval of once every half an hour, using the same timeline, the course would only need one week.

If one stack with an interval of ten minutes was introduced into the schedule, it would add that ten minute delay to the schedule. At some point that ten minutes would delay the last card of the day back by ten minutes, pushing that card to the next day; the last card's release time would come at 3:10, ten minutes after the last card can be released on that day.

Please Note: The learner must currently be logged into their academy in order to view revealed cards immediately when scheduled. If a schedule spans three days, but a learner doesn't log in for a week after they've been assigned the micro-course, they would receive all the cards and stacks at one time.

The first card presented to a learner — along with the title card — is available immediately as soon as the micro-course is assigned, regardless of when that happens relative to the configured schedule. If a learner is assigned or enrolls between scheduled release days, the wait shown before the next card unlocks (for example, “about 2 days remaining” together with a countdown timer) represents a single combined wait period, not two separate delays — the days and the timer together make up one total countdown until the next card becomes available on the configured schedule.

Unlike other Microlearning cards, the title card displays its image as a full-card background that fills the entire card rather than fitting within it the way image and text card pictures do (see Image Upload Requirements above). For best results, use an image around 270 × 360 pixels, following a 90:120 (width:height) aspect ratio, so it isn't unexpectedly cropped or stretched when it fills the card.

The last step is to set the visibility. Choose your preference and click Publish to publish your micro-course.
