How a User's Preferred Language Affects Their View of the Course Catalog

This article explains how a learner's Preferred Language setting determines which courses they
can see and self-enroll in from the Course Catalog, including what happens when no Preferred
Language is set.

To locate this setting, follow the steps outlined below.

In the left navigation, make sure you are in the Academy Workspace.

When in the Academy Workspace, select Settings

From the left-hand menu, select Training as the filter type, then choose Courses.

Under the Courses section, locate the "English courses visible to all users without the need to set English as their preferred or spoken language" setting.

Scenario A: The setting is turned on

Let's take the following example:
Course A language is set to French.
Course B language is set to English.
User A has their Preferred Language set to French.
User B has their Preferred Language set to English.

User A will be able to find both Course A and Course B in the Course Catalog.
User B will be able to find only Course B in the Course Catalog.

Scenario B: The setting is turned off

Using the same example courses and users:
User A will be able to find only Course A in the Course Catalog.
User B will be able to find only Course B in the Course Catalog.

Notes for Both Scenarios

Note 1: If a course is directly assigned to a user, even if the course's language doesn't match their Preferred Language, the user can still access it under My Training. This is unrelated to Course Catalog self-enrollment and always applies.

Note 2: Completing a course does not change based on a later Preferred Language update. If a
user was assigned a course in one language and then changes their Preferred Language
afterward, they retain access to the originally assigned course.

What Happens When No Preferred Language Is Set

If a user has not selected a Preferred Language in their profile at all, Schoox treats their Preferred Language as English by default. This applies to the Course Catalog regardless of whether the setting in Scenario A and Scenario B above is turned on or off.

Example:
• Course A language is set to French.
• Course B language is set to English.
• User C has no Preferred Language set in their profile.

User C will be able to find only Course B in the Course Catalog, regardless of whether the Scenario A/B setting is on or off.

Note: This default only affects self-enrollment through the Course Catalog. As with Note 1 above, if a course is directly assigned to a user who has no Preferred Language set, that user can still access it under My Training regardless of the course's language.

Language Versus UI Language.
